21 year swallowing phobia clears after 2 simple rounds of basic EFT

Imagine having a fear of swallowing, especially in front of other people. Would that limit your life a bit? I had a session which was one of my most interesting. It's a good example of listening to the needs of the client at this moment, and going to exactly the place the client wants to go, and to the goal they want to achieve.

A middle aged female executive came with a phobia about swallowing, which had plagued her for 21 years! And even though she can nibble, and swallow very tiny bits, she can NEVER eat in front of someone, including the man she's been living with and deeply loving for over 10 years. This phobia has held her back in every avenue of her life. She had recently been promoted and the new position demanded that she have many business luncheons. So her issue became urgent.

I told her to bring something that she might want to eat and she brought a beautiful red apple. Within five minutes of beginning the EFT, and doing only two sessions of it, she took a bite of the apple, chewed and swallowed it and began to cry.... as she realized that she had not only been able to swallow without any difficulty but had done so in front of me!

In a long standing phobia like this I usually go back to the first time the phobia appeared. But in this case we talked for almost 45 minutes before the tapping. I learned she'd been in therapy for over 9 years and had recently written a final letter to the person who'd abused her continuously since she was very young. I've been a psychotherapist for over 38 years, and in my intuitive judgment I felt that most of the underlying problems which had created this phobia had been settled. So I thought that we'd go for the biggest log in the log jam and see it that would work. And it did. She started at a 9 and I had her say:

Even though I'm terrified to swallow and I can never swallow in front of anyone…

She went down to 4 on a scale of 0 to 10 and then we tapped:

Even though I'm still terrified to swallow and I can never swallow in front of anyone...

Standard EFT - nothing fancy - two complete rounds, including the 9 Gamut, did it!!! Before she left she had eaten the whole apple with glee at every mouthful!!!

I always include the 9 Gamut with the first session because I want my clients to learn it properly. I also give them a copy of Gary's CD and one page clearly explaining the form and noting the tapping positions. I do this at the very beginning of the first session so clients are relieved and they don't have half a mind attempting to remember the points or the phrases as we use them. This allows my clients to be 100% with the process as we work it through.
