How Can I Get Beyond Procrastination?

Question: I am wondering how you would handle procrastination, motivation, and generally moving things up your priority list?

Answer: As I see it, a central cause for procrastination and related motivation issues involves "perceived penalties" for attaining the achievements. Once you have located the perceived penalties, you can reduce them to specific events and collapse them as usual. These perceived penalties can be a challenge to locate but here are some standard possibilities to get you started.

  • If I move forward, I will exceed the levels of my parent/sibling/best friend, etc. and they may not love me any more.

  • If I move forward, I may not do it as well as my parent/sibling/best friend, etc. and I will feel like a failure.

  • If I move forward, more will be expected of me.

  • If I move forward, other people will be jealous and criticize me.

These beliefs are common and great freedoms are available when they are finally put aside.

Hope this helps, Gary
