Newbie completely collapses a fear of heights

Hi Everyone,

Here is one of those remarkable "one session wonders" where a lifetime limiting fear becomes history in short order. Thanks to Diane Balsara for submitting it. She says near the end, "I am noticing that people who have done EFT, although they have a memory of the disability, trauma, or phobia, they have so little emotional attachment to it that they speak of it as if you asked them to pass the salt at the dinner table.  It becomes a total non-event in their lives.  Which is precisely the point!"

Dear Gary,

Although I am not a medical practitioner I have been interested in the energy system of the body and have worked with different healing modalities.  I am extremely excited about EFT, having used it with myself and others.  In essence, I am a layman and would encourage anyone who has gone through your DVDs to not hesitate or feel intimidated about using EFT because they don't have credentials.  It is so effective you can get it very wrong, upside down, and out of sequence and it still works.

I recently worked with a lady I will call 'Kate'.  Kate had entered firefighter school after becoming an EMT and then a paramedic.  She dropped out after the first few weeks because she did not like the physical work, and because she had a fear of heights and felt she may be putting her co-workers and those being rescued in jeopardy.

Kate and I worked on her fear of heights, sitting together in a park in the down town area.  She attributed her fear of heights to her childhood and said it stemmed from movies - watching people fighting and falling off buildings.  She always felt like someone was going to push her over the railing.  We tapped on her fear of heights, her knowing she was afraid as a little girl, her knowing in her mind her fear wasn't rational, her leaving the fire academy.

I simply took my direction from what she told me.  Afterward, when she was down to a zero, I asked if she would like to test the EFT by going up to the sixth floor of the parking garage.  She said she would.  When we got off the elevator I cautioned her and said this is not about you feeling uncomfortable, if you have any discomfort say so and we can leave.

She said she was fine with it and walked right up to the side which had two thick cables, placed her hand on the cable and said, “Wow!  This is really cool.  It's so pretty,” as she enjoyed the view.  I asked if she was feeling any discomfort and she said when she thought about someone pushing her she still felt that her level of intensity was 2 or 3 on a scale of 0 to 10, so we tapped some more.  Her level of intensity went down to a zero standing on the sixth floor of the parking garage, next to the edge.

Two weeks later I asked her how her fear of heights was and whether she had any more feelings about it.  She said, “Well, last week I went to a fair and we went on two roller coaster rides.  I had a lot of fun.”  She was very matter of fact about it.  I asked whether she would have done that before and she said she would have never gotten on the ride.

I am noticing that people who have done EFT, although they have a memory of the disability, trauma, or phobia, they have so little emotional attachment to it that they speak of it as if you asked them to pass the salt at the dinner table.  It becomes a total non-event in their lives.  Which is precisely the point!  Thank you, Gary for all your work, what an amazing healing modality.  I am moving my life in a direction where I can practice this in a more professional role.

Thank you,

Diane Balsara
